Have a drink in a grandiose high mountain setting on a magnificent terrace on the edge of an enchanting lake with a view of the Pierra Menta… it's sure, it's well worth a little effort!
Have a drink in a grandiose high mountain setting on a magnificent terrace on the edge of an enchanting lake with a view of the Pierra Menta… it's sure, it's well worth a little effort!

The path that progresses through the alpine lawn runs along the Treicol stream, whose water that descends from the peaks keeps the cold of winter snows even on the hottest summer days.

The flowers accustomed to this climate happily push their delicate petals towards the sunlight. Rhododendrons, gentians, geraniums bloom in spots of color on the green and gray which form the background of the painting.

The trail rises to the Col du Bresson, overlooking the turquoise waters of Lac de Roselend. A few drops of sweat bead on the forehead during the climb, but the pace is regular.

Then the refuge is there. With modern and discreet architecture, it finds its place in this decor to which the lake gives a perfect serenity.

It's time to stop and contemplate the magnificent landscape, warmed by the warmth of the reception of the guards and the pleasantly lit stove when the air is a little cool. What a sweet shelter for a night closer to the stars at the foot of the mythical Pierra Menta...

Topo / step by step
Departure: Treicol car park. 1/ Follow the pastoral track and join the GR5 a little higher (red and white markings) which intersect the bends of the track. 2/ Higher up, take the fork to the left of the GR5 in the direction of the Col de Bresson. 3/ At the Col de Bresson, leave the GR5 and take the path on the left towards the refuge and Lac de Presset. The markup then becomes red and yellow (GRP Tour du Beaufortain). 4/ The refuge is set on a promontory, with the lake hidden behind. Return by the same route.

History, culture and heritage
Before arriving at the Col de Bresson, you will see the herds of cows and the alpine chalets, in particular that of Conchette where Beaufort is made on site. From the Presset refuge, a splendid view of the Pierra Menta (the middle stone), a majestic monolith recognizable from afar, which gave its name to the mythical ski mountaineering race. The Presset sector is ideal for observing the many ibexes and for picnicking by the lake.
